Tonight, we gathered at the home of friends, sat around the television and waited. While we waited, we had the 4-year old's favorite dinner - breakfast! Yummy!
We watched as polygons plastered across a section of the North American Continent were symbolically colored red and blue. There was even an ice rink in New York with the same design. There was a lot of disconcerting red for quite some time. The magic "270" seemed unachievable for over an excruciating hour. Then, after dinner was over and the west coast polls were closed, the announcement was made. We danced in the living room. We celebrated the dawning of a new day.
We cheered as President-Elect Obama gave his acceptance speech shortly thereafter.
Breakfast for dinner was always a childhood treat for me too. This election night is kind of like breakfast for dinner. Nutritionally sound, exciting for its novelty, and oh-so-satisfying!
There is a lot of hard work ahead. I'm fortunate to be well fed! :)

There was no dancing for Obama where we live. I learned last week that this part of NE is the reddest part of our nation (Bush had his biggest margin of victory here in district 3 four years ago).
Keith and I pretty much keep to ourselves about our political views for fear of being ostracized, but it is funny to see peoples' reactions when we occasionally speak up -- like the time Keith was listening to the office staff complain that the McCain campaign wasn't trying hard enough to bring attention to the fact that Bill Clinton signed legislation that helped deregulate the banks which has since contributed to our current financial crisis. Keith politely pointed out that McCain's economic advisor, Phil Gramm was the one that wrote that legislation and tacked it onto that years budget appropriations bill at the last second before Clinton signed it. That was a few years before Gramm called us all "a nation of whiners" and was fired, but nonetheless probably not a good thing to bring attention to. The group fell silent.
This morning I walked into the same group of gals saying how scary the next 4 years would be and how surprised they were how few black people voted for Obama. I just shook my head. They must watch different news channels than I do.
Anyway, we are glad too, and I think anyone would have been a huge improvement on the conceited monkey that is currently in the white house. McCain gave a nice concession speech.
Also, I haven't had breakfast for dinner in years... sounds good!
i thought of you in that red state, smack in the middle of the country, with a lot of other red states surrounding.
if its any consolation, i smiled to know that we had a small infiltration there :)
we have officially cancelled our plans to be sponsored by our canadian friends to cross the border. seriously.
i agree that mccains concession speech was well done. thank god palin didn't get to speak. i have the same visceral reaction to her voice as i do to W's. pure gut revulsion.
